The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia

The National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) is the custodian of Australia’s analogue and born digital national audiovisual collection that contains almost 4 million items. Our mandate is to collect, preserve and share the remarkable story of the Australian audiovisual experience through the creativity and history represented in film, television, radio, recorded sound, augmented reality, online, videogames and associated contextual documentation and ephemera.  Our primary focus is on Australian production and Australian related production. 

The Collection Digital Services team is responsible for digital preservation processes relating to the National Film and Sound Archive Digital Collection and Games and Interactive Media for the purpose of long-term preservation, distribution and access.

The Opportunity

The Collection Digital Services team requires a Collection Digital Services Assistant with a proven track record of working with audiovisual digital objects and digital carriers in a broadcast, production or cultural environment. The position will support the Collection Digital Services team in providing a range of services to assist in the processing of born digital acquisitions.

A demonstrated strong customer focussed approach and commitment to achieving deadlines is required.
 

Job Description

Under general direction undertake the following duties:

  • Assist in the processing of incoming digital acquisitions, including using applications and systems for the purpose of digital preservation and management.
  • Work closely with Collection Digital Services team members to identify and prioritise digital preservation activities.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of efficient and effective digital preservation workflows and provide advice to Collection Digital Services team members.
  • Contribute to administrative tasks including reporting and to the strategic planning and decision making within the team. 

Selection Criteria

In relation to the ‘Job Details’ listed above, concisely demonstrate your skills, experience and achievements against each of the following areas:

  1. Proven audiovisual knowledge in a broadcast, production or cultural environment, with experience handling digital carriers and a foundational understanding of digital preservation practices and applications.
  2. A demonstrated knowledge of digital objects formats and associated standards, postproduction techniques and experience with digital delivery systems, in a broadcast, production or cultural context.
  3. Proven analytical skills and attention to detail with a solutions-based approach to problem solving and meeting deadlines in a face paced environment.
  4. Ability to develop, implement and document efficient and effective digital preservation workflows in line with best practice standards, resources and priorities.  
  5. Well-developed written and oral communication skills, including presenting complex processes to a variety of audiences and stakeholders, and the ability to work within a team environment.

Desired Skills and Experience

Qualifications and/or equivalent experience required:

Relevant tertiary degree or technical qualifications and/or the equivalent experience in an industry, production and/or cultural environment.

Eligibility 

To be eligible for this position you must:

  • Be an Australian Citizen
  • Satisfactorily complete an Australian Federal Police National Police Check

The other eligibility that may be included in a job would also include the following:

  • Obtain and maintain an Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance. 
  • Obtain and maintain a Working with Vulnerable People registration.
